A year of COVID - how the clinical research industry has changed

Life has fundamentally shifted for everyone since we learned about COVID-19 and the year has been frequently (and fairly) referred to as ‘unprecedented’. As we mark this unusual anniversary it offers an important opportunity to reflect on how it has affected us and what we have learned from it.

For many, clinical research has become part of modern language. Understanding has grown about what clinical research is, how it works and why it is so important. But what has changed for the industry itself?

We’ve reflected and these are our thoughts:

  • Greater need for timely but effective clinical research
  • Different approaches to patient recruitment
  • More elements of clinical trials being undertaken remotely
  • Increasing emphasis and reliance on technology, including increase of wearable technologies
  • New time pressures and focus on research, highlighting the importance of ensuring quality and a ‘right first time’ approach
  • A strong emphasis on the importance of good patient engagement and reassurance
  • An evolved regulatory landscape with more acceptance of real-world data for control arms
